Preparing for your first assessment

A practical starting point for organising your scope, responsibilities and evidence.

Begin with a clear scope

Write down the activities, locations and services your management system covers. A shared understanding of those boundaries helps people prepare relevant information and prevents assumptions about what will be assessed.

Bring the right people into the conversation

Identify who owns each process and who can explain how work is done. Preparation should involve the people carrying out the activities, as well as those maintaining the documentation.

Use evidence from everyday work

Gather records that show how processes operate: reviews, checks, actions and decisions. Look for gaps between written procedures and actual practice, and give your team time to address them.

Review before you proceed

Use your internal audit and management review to understand readiness. Keep track of unresolved actions and ask questions about the assessment arrangements early. Preparation supports an informed assessment; it does not predetermine the decision.
